Comparison of Vulnerability of Developed and Developing Economies to Disaster Ripple Effects: The Case of Japan and the Philippines
Project Leader: Dr. Krista Danielle Yu
Funding Agency: The Sumitomo Foundation
Duration: April 2015 to March 2016
This study proposed the construction of a closed inoperability input-output model for Japan and the Philippines. A closed inoperability input-output model will allow us to conduct an ex-post analysis of recent events, such as the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Such analysis will allow us to re-calibrate the models to estimate the impact of future catastrophic events for planning purposes. Given that both countries are vulnerable to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and typhoons, the study will be able to provide perspectives from developed and developing countries.
